It is called the Mediterranean draw. I never practiced the three under because it always felt goofy. You are describing the unconscious aiming. Your mind sees a sight picture and by looking at the place you want to hit, you are putting it in the sight picture. For beginners-In the last couple of inches of draw there is a 'V' formed by the arrow shaft and the sight window or side of the bow. A target bullseye looks bigger at ten yards so the archer cants the bow to open up the 'V'. At thirty yards it looks smaller so the cant is decreased. Geometrically, canting reduces the vertical distance between the arrow and your eye. This is an unconscious elevation adjustment. I would teach youngsters by having them look at an object then close their eyes and point at the object without moving their head and eyes. When they open their eyes, they are amazed that they are pointing at the object.

My entire traditional bow hunting etc was based on instinctive shooting. I tried the “ aiming” stuff. The fingers under the arrow stuff and it just wasn’t for me. One thing that I feel gave an edge was I shot a lot. I mean that was what I was- a long bow wooden arrow hunter. For me it was so natural to just draw back while focused 100% on whatever spot and let it fly. There’s no other feeling like it.

Spent ten minutes selling the viewer a $200 saw. Wood and carbon shafts put your dremel in a vice, turn it on, and cut a dozen shafts in five minutes, with aluminum shafts use a 5$ mini pipe cutter and zip through the tubing in the same 5-10 minutes. Been cutting aluminum shafts with a little hand held pipe cutter for 50 years. Also, maybe I missed it but I didn’t see mention of cleaning shafts with acetone or denatured alcohol prior to applying wraps. Why use super glue for fletching and then use Fletch Tite for leading bead?? Fletch Tite is the only glue I’ve used to fletch my arrows for, you guessed it, about 50 years. A good instructional video other than the heavy handed saw sales pitch.

Gaining confidence in being able to shoot and hit accurately using instinctive shooting comes with PRACTICE. Lots and lots of practice. Why do basketball coaches run free throw shooting drills over and over again for every player on the team? It's one of the "easy" shots in the sport yet frequent practice hones shooting ability, increases success, and builds confidence. Same thing with shooting a bow instinctively. We all need constant PRACTICE. Having said that, I tell archers to STOP WORRYING about all the process of shooting instinctively. It will develop and improve over time if you just PRACTICE. Here's something to think about. I have been shooting the SAME Bear Kodiak Magnum recurve bow instinctively for 56 years. You can see my bow and me shooting it on my channel. I'm 71 now and still hunting with it, despite having congestive heart failure. After that much time, and using the same bow, I am readily able to shoot decent groups which work well for deer hunting. I promise if an archer continues to shoot several THOUSAND arrows per year in practice for 56 years YOU WILL GET GOOD at shooting instinctively. You also won't have much trouble as you age continuing to pull and hold the bow. It will just feel natural to you as your muscles will remain strong. Try shooting 5 groups of 6 arrows during a daily session. Don't over do your shooting as too many shots can result in bad shots, which does NOTHING to build technique. Shoot 30 arrows today, then 30 more tomorrow. And do that 3 to 5 days per week if you can....year round if possible. My point here is if you shoot thousands of arrows in a consistent practice routine, you will develop proficiency. Your body will develop muscle memory that helps you follow good form, anchor properly, and do all the things you need to do. Your brain will develop a subconscious memory of what worked and what did not work. The day will come, for some quicker than others, when an archer will simply step up, nock an arrow, draws, anchors, and releases all in one nice smooth process, much like a golfer teeing off. Amazingly your arrows will start hitting where you want them to hit. First at one distance, then at multiple distances, angles, positions, etc. It does require plenty of practice however. So stop worrying and obsessing. Just make your practice sessions FUN and stick with it. Good luck to all.

I have primarily shot an elevated rest on my recurves. I recently started shooting off the shelf because I bought a new Black widow. However, I think I’m going to go back to the elevated rest I have shot. The best stick on elevated rest ever made was the old Hoyt Pro Flex rest which NEET made one for a few years but stopped making there’s also. Thank you for these super informative videos Jeff! As a beginner that couldn't understand anything that you say two weeks ago, I'm starting to get the thing, but... I still confused when you usually use the GT Warrior 500 spine as a good example, ( 7.4GPI x28" shaft=207.2gr +250gr total point weight = 457.2gr arrow) but also say that the ideal arrow weight for hunting would be 550gr arrow, or at least 500gr arrow weight, for a #43 to #45 bow. My question is, on that arrow set-up, would be possible to add more point weight to reach those sweet 500gr-550gr (it means going above 250gr point) or would be necessary to go down to 400 spine, for a 300gr total point weight?

My feelings are there are more archers shooting 35-45lbs than we have seen in a long time. Why?? Mainly because traditional shooting has evolved back around to a more formal draw, anchor slowly pull through execution. Where what I seen when I was younger was MANY guys shooting bow wayyyy to heavy for them and they were grip it and rip it, short drawing snap shooters. Because they was over bowed. That has seemed to be fading out. I now see guys working through shot execution and holding at draw longer than I ever had previously seen. I have been to a lot of tradition shoots over the years. And I would venture to say 80% or more were over bowed….

Love that Standard Ol Battle Bow! I enjoyed how you were talking about the instinctive small aim point against the dark background, that’s the only way I can group well, I use a wiffle practice golf ball up against the black backstop at the range, and literally the first time I did that I hit the dang ball, I couldn’t believe it, I have guys that still talk about that today, with a small group of arrows all grouped around that wiffle practice golf ball. When I use the paper targets and things aren’t grouping, I automatically go back to the wiffle golf ball, against the black backdrop of the backstop wall, it works every time💯 the ole, Aim Small, Miss Small 🎯

Dude amazing video!! You just talked me onto trying a trad bow!! just going to try a black hunter recurve at 40 lbs and see what happens.. i shot recurve bows as a child but since i started bowhunting i got serious about compound bows !! You are so right about shooting archery is a huge stress relief for me for sure!! i take mt atv and my target back into the woods miles away from anyone and just shoot!! Best feeling ever and no one on earth knows where i am !! A truly freeing incredible sport!! Its always good to be an archer!! Thats for sure !!

@@michaelgmcauliffe honestly brother I’ve never been able to get vanes to work on any trad bow but they do make trad vanes now that are a bit softer, I’d definitely get some feather fletched arrows for it 👍🏻
